In the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, something special is happening in government schools. The students will now learn important life skills along with their normal studies. This is part of a new program called "Learn by Doing" or "Karke Sikho". The main goal of this program is to make children self-reliant and confident. The government has started this activity to help children learn by doing practical work.
Under this plan, students will learn how to make juice, cook simple food like pakoras, and even do basic engineering and farming tasks. This program is for students in Classes 6 to 8. It will help children understand how things work in real life, not just in books. When children do things with their own hands, they learn better and remember longer.
To make this program successful, each block in Saharanpur has selected two schools where the number of students is highest. In total, 24 schools across the district are part of this training program. All these selected schools have received a grant of ₹28,770 to buy the tools and equipment needed for the activities.
With this money, schools will buy useful items like mixers for juice-making, tools for welding, equipment to fix tires, and farming tools like spades. These things will help students get hands-on training in small tasks related to agriculture, food, and basic engineering. The students will also get a chance to use the equipment during the school day.
For example, in the cooking activity, students will learn to wash, cut, and cook vegetables, make healthy drinks, and hygienically serve them. This will teach them about cleanliness, teamwork, and food preparation. In farming-related tasks, they will learn how to use tools in the garden, prepare soil, and plant seeds. These are very useful skills, especially for children from rural areas.
In schools where engineering tasks are planned, students will be taught how to use simple welding tools. They will also learn to fix cycle punctures and understand how machines work. This type of training is very useful for real life and gives children early exposure to job-related skills.
The idea behind this program is not just skill training, but building confidence. When students learn to make something with their hands, they feel proud and happy. It makes them believe in their abilities. This kind of training can help children think about future careers and prepare them for challenges.
This new education method is called experiential learning. It means students learn from experience, not only from books. They see, touch, try, and understand. This makes their learning strong and complete. The government wants every child to grow up with useful knowledge that can help them in life.
The “Learn by Doing” program is now active in many famous government schools in Saharanpur. More than 50 types of tools and items are being bought for this. Teachers in these schools have also been guided on how to use this equipment and teach the students safely. The schools will organize regular sessions where students can take part in these learning activities.
In every selected school, students will get chances to work in small groups. This will teach them teamwork, discipline, and the importance of sharing responsibilities. They will also learn how to manage time and complete tasks step by step.
The government believes that children should not just depend on books. They must learn skills that help them in daily life. Not all children become doctors or engineers, but all can become skilled and self-reliant. This program is one big step towards that goal.

Each of the 24 schools in the district will prepare a timetable for these activities. One day maybe for cooking, another day for farming, and another for repairing or engineering tasks. Schools will keep records of how students are learning and improving.
Parents have also welcomed this program. Many of them say that such training will help their children learn real-life skills and become stronger and smarter. Some parents have even said that their children now help more at home after learning in school.
In the future, the government may expand this program to more schools and include more skills. Other districts may also follow the Saharanpur model and provide similar training to their students.
Education is not only about passing exams. It is about becoming a good and capable human being. Programs like “Learn by Doing” help children grow in all ways – mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially.
This initiative shows how the government is changing the way schools work. It is giving importance to skill-based learning and preparing students for life. Children from rural areas, who may not have access to expensive training, are now getting this in their schools.

In the coming months, these 24 schools will send feedback and reports to the government. Based on their success, the next phase of the program may be launched. The government may increase funds and cover more areas like tailoring, electrical work, computer basics, etc.
This is a new beginning for school education in Saharanpur. If successful, it can become a model for the whole state and even the country. It shows that even small steps can make big changes in children’s lives.
